Dan Beckmann, Go To Team\u2019s Orlando Director of Photography, was on location for NBC News\u2019 coverage of the launch of the space shuttle Atlantis.\u00a0 This was the 126th flight of the space shuttle fleet, the 30th flight for Atlantis, and the last to the Hubble Space Telescope.<\/p>\n
Covering the launch live, with NBC News correspondent, Jay Barbree, the Atlantis crew of 7 took off for an 11day mission to make repairs to Hubble. Beckmann has served in the NBC News Studio for countless launches and always works with Barbree to ensure the highest level of production. While mission critical to NBC’s live coverage Beckmann and Barbree have a slightly less diffcult task than the astronauts they cover!<\/p>\n
The mission manifest called for 5 different space walks, as astronauts put in place new advanced technology to improve the telescope\u2019s discovery power by 17 times.\u00a0 The \u201cspace walkers\u201d installed new instruments and thermal blankets, repaired two existing instruments, and refurbished various subsystems \u2013 replacing gyroscopes, batteries, and new units to store and transmit more breathtaking images back to earth.<\/p>\n
Since 1990, Hubble has been capturing images never before seen by the human eye.\u00a0 Some of Hubble\u2019s greatest discoveries: determining the age of the universe (13.7 billion years); discovering that all major galaxies have black holes at their center; discovering that the process of planetary formation is relatively common; and detecting the first ever organic molecule in the atmosphere of a planet orbiting another star.<\/p>\n
Hubble has been \u201clooking\u201d at images more than 12 billion light years away.\u00a0 This latest repair mission will expand the operational life span of Hubble through at least 2014.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
