We wrapped season 3 of Fixer Upper with a crew pic. \u00a0Not a bad looking group of people.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Recently I wrapped on Season 3 of \u201cFixer Upper.\u201d\u00a0 It was a rewarding feeling to know that another season worth of content was in the \u201ccan.\u201d\u00a0 I can\u2019t believe I\u2019ve had the privilege to be the Director of Photography on 40 episodes of the show.\u00a0 It has been quite the journey.\u00a0 This season was filled with challenges and changes but ultimately the crew of \u201cFixer Upper\u201d pushed on.<\/p>\n

Season 3 saw a producer change, format tweaks, and even a change in the gear we use on the show.\u00a0 Towards the half way point we made a switch from ENG glass to Canon\u2019s L-Series glass.\u00a0 Shooting scene work with Canon\u2019s L-Series glass is a challenge but it did allow for a more \u201ccinematic look\u201d as far as depth of field and bokeh (how the lens renders out-of-focus light) are concerned.\u00a0 The new glass requires you to \u201czoom with your feet.\u201d\u00a0 Our primary lens for shooting scene work is the Canon 24mm-105mm f4.\u00a0 It\u2019s nice to have the image stabilization but I wish this lens was wider.\u00a0 The change in glass caused us to approach scene work differently.\u00a0 For instance, getting a wide shot usually means I have to shoot from the next room.\u00a0 I find myself shooting through a door way and it tends to give my wide shot a voyeuristic look.\u00a0 I don\u2019t mind it.\u00a0 Most of the time it\u00a0 looks cool and I welcome the foreground.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve been shooting \u201cOTFs\u201d AKA \u201cOn The Fly Interviews\u201d with the Canon 70mm-200mm f2.8.\u00a0 If we\u2019re in a rush I\u2019ll make it work with the 24mm-105mm.\u00a0 One of the best changes to my camera rig has been using Zacuto\u2019s Universal Baseplate.\u00a0 This baseplate works with the Sony VCT-14 mount on my tripod.\u00a0 It has made the transition from handheld shooting to \u201csticks\u201d very smooth.<\/p>\n

Chip and Jo are obviously a blast to work with.\u00a0 Chip is always finding ways to goof with the crew.\u00a0 On demolition day Chip will throw debris within inches of us.\u00a0 Of course, that\u2019s just another good reason to wear steel toed boots on “demo day”.\u00a0 Chip has also placed little lizards on my shoulder while I\u2019m shooting.\u00a0 It\u2019s fair to say that I scream like a little girl whenever he does that.<\/p>\n

The Fixer Upper crew has even had lunch with a former president!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Working on \u201cFixer Upper\u201d has been a wonderful experience.\u00a0 Like any adventure, it has its ups and its downs but overall I have learned so much from DP\u2019ing this show and working with all the talented individuals that make up the crew.\u00a0 Season 3 of \u201cFixer Upper\u201d aired on December 1st on HGTV.\u00a0 #seasonthreeiscoming<\/p>\n

PS.\u00a0 For all you Fixer Upper fans out there you\u2019ll be happy to know that we have started shooting season 4.<\/p>\n
