The Art of an \u201cOTF.\u201d<\/p>\n

What in the world is an \u201cOTF?\u201d\u00a0 Great question.\u00a0 Basically an \u201cOTF\u201d means an interview.\u00a0 \u201cOTF\u201d is an abbreviation for \u201cOn the Fly.\u201d\u00a0 So the full technical translation for \u201cOTF\u201d would be an \u201cOn the Fly Interview\u201d with talent.\u00a0 On \u201cFixer Upper\u201d all of our \u201cOTFs\u201d are stand up interviews shot outside.\u00a0 Only on the rarest of occasions do we shoot an \u201cOTF\u201d inside.<\/p>\n

I think \u201cFixer Upper\u201d has some of the best stand up \u201cOTFs\u201d on television.\u00a0 I\u00a0 take pride in that.\u00a0 It may not seem like a big set up or that we put much thought into it but I set out to make every \u201cOTF\u201d look like a million bucks.\u00a0 Creating a good looking \u201cOTF\u201d is an art form.<\/p>\n

The first thing — and perhaps the most important — is the background.\u00a0 The background can make or break an \u201cOTF.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m looking for three things when it comes to a good background.\u00a0 First off, the background needs to have the same amount of light hitting it that will hit the subjects with a scrim overhead.\u00a0 Second, the background should have texture.\u00a0 Third, the background should have two kinds of qualities that meet in the middle of frame.\u00a0 By doing this you create a background that is interesting but also helps in drawing the focus to the subjects that are placed in the middle of the frame.<\/p>\n

Once you\u2019ve found the right background it\u2019s time to set up the scrim.\u00a0 I use a 6×6 silk with 1-1\/4 stop of diffusion.\u00a0 The scrim helps to even the light and shadows on Chip and Jo.\u00a0 Sometimes I put the sun behind them and use the scrim to cut down on the amount of light that is hitting their back.\u00a0 I\u2019ve found that most of the time having Chip and Jo back lit actually looks better.\u00a0 Usually I\u2019ll add a bounce or Lite Panel just off camera when my subjects are back lit.<\/p>\n

The last ingredient to a \u201cFixer Upper\u201d \u201cOTF\u201d is the placement of Chip and Jo.\u00a0 When Chip and Jo are doing an \u201cOTF\u201d together I always have Chip on the left side of the frame and Jo on the right side of the frame.\u00a0 They look camera right.\u00a0 When the \u201cOTF\u201d is just Chip he stands on the left side of the frame and looks camera right.\u00a0 When it\u2019s just an \u201cOTF\u201d with Jo she stands on the right side of the frame and looks camera left.\u00a0 There are similar rules for the home owners.<\/p>\n

By following these guidelines we create consistency and order for our interviews.\u00a0 It\u2019s a formulaic choice that helps tell the story.\u00a0 It\u2019s probably something that the average viewer doesn\u2019t notice.\u00a0 However, I like to think that by following these rules we subconsciously communicate to the viewer that it\u2019s time for an \u201cOTF\u201d and Chip and Jo are here to tell their story.<\/p>\n
