Almost a year ago I had the great opportunity to work on the pilot of a possible HGTV show based in Waco, TX.\u00a0 It was a wonderful experience and I was so eager to see what would become of it.\u00a0 Months went by before I received word that the show had been picked up.\u00a0 How cool is that?\u00a0 Of course, the news got even better when I was chosen to be the show\u2019s Director of Photography.<\/p>\n

We work hard and we play hard.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Suddenly my plate was packed with things to do.\u00a0 We only had a few weeks to wrangle the necessary gear for the show.\u00a0 It was certainly a challenge.\u00a0 The company that is producing the show picked the Canon C300 as the camera we would shoot on.\u00a0 It was then up to me to decided what lenses and accessories would be needed to make this camera work in a \u201crun and gun\u201d environment.<\/p>\n

The biggest dilemma was picking the right glass for the project.\u00a0 There was no perfect answer when it came to that.\u00a0 As much as I like the Fujion 19-90mm PL-mount ENG lens, it just doesn\u2019t have the range I need.\u00a0 That kind of lens just isn\u2019t going to cut it when I\u2019m shooting inside homes or small rooms.\u00a0 I could have gone with Canon L-Series glass but I feared that I would have to change lenses too much.\u00a0 The answer was definitely out there but I was going to have to think a little bit out of the box.<\/p>\n

I call this my “Frankenstein.” It looks crazy but this rig gets the job done.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Sometimes the answer is right in front of you.\u00a0 In my case, it really was.\u00a0 We have these great ENG lenses we use on the HDX900, Varicam, and other 2\/3 chip cameras.\u00a0 Why not use those?\u00a0 A company called IBE makes an EF mount to B4 mount adapter that will work perfectly with the Canon C300.\u00a0 Not only does it allow you to mount B4 mount lenses to the C300, it also contains some fancy glass (I\u2019m not an engineer) that essentially \u201cblows up\u201d the image so it will cover the entire Super 35mm sensor that is on the C300.\u00a0 Unlike other adapters, there is no need to use the lens\u2019 extender nor will you notice any vignetting.<\/p>\n

I was a little hesitant at first to use this set up, mainly because it throws the camera\u2019s ergonomics way off.\u00a0 What was once a small and nimble camera now becomes bulky and heavy.\u00a0 It took weeks to figure out the right pieces to make this, \u201cFrankenstein\u201d camera comfortable.\u00a0 Honestly, I\u2019m still working on it.\u00a0 However, the current set up gets the job done and it\u2019s pretty comfy to work with.\u00a0 Hell, I\u2019ll settle for a little discomfort if it means walking away with the footage I\u2019ve been getting.\u00a0 This lens\/camera combination is awesome.\u00a0 I can achieve the shallow depth of field I want when I need it but also get the focal length range I need for the typical \u201crun and gun\u201d situation.<\/p>\n

HGTV just aired the first episode of Fixer Upper last week.\u00a0 You can catch the show every Thursday night at 11pm EST \/ 10pm CST.\u00a0 It\u2019s been pretty cool to see something you\u2019ve been working on for the past 7 months air on a major cable network.\u00a0 Fingers crossed that we get a second season.\u00a0 That would be awesome!<\/p>\n
