About Ryan
- What cameras and equipment have you worked with the most?
My Sony FX9 is my primary camera, but I shot on the Sony F5 for years before making the switch. I have experience with most of Sony’s lineup; the FS7, FS5, FX3 and especially the A7S line when I need something small to go on my Ronin S gimbal. I’m familiar with nearly every brand of camera though; I’ve done a lot of work with the Canon C300mkII and have been lucky enough to shoot on RED cameras as well. My lens kit consists of the Canon L-Series 16-35, 70-200, 50mm and 85mm primes, as well as my main run-and-gun lens the Sony 28-135, but I’ve had plenty of opportunities to work with really high end cine lenses like the Zeiss CP.3’s and the Canon CNE’s. My light kit is extensive, with my Astras being my main workhorses; they’re light and portable and pack a big punch and they can be battery operated for easy use anywhere. When I need a really large source I have my Nanlite 300s, and the smaller Nanlite 60s to complement them. All of these are LEDs so they don’t take up nearly as much power as older models and don’t produce as much heat.
- Do you specialize in a specific shoot style?
A lot of the work I do takes me into a very fast-paced environment. Sports, entertainment and of course the news and political work that comes with living so close to the nation’s capital mean that I have to be ready for anything at a moment’s notice, though I do really enjoy the types of projects where I have the time to really craft a look. So whether it’s setting up a news hit an hour before we go live, or setting a documentary interview the day before we shoot, I’m your man.
- How long have you been filming?
I’ve been with Go To Team for 5 years now, but freelanced for a few years before that.
- Do you have a favorite project you’ve worked on?
I like any kind of documentary work, which I’ve been lucky enough to have a chance to contribute to some really great ones. I’ve shot interviews for the Netflix series ‘Vox Explained’ as well as a series called ‘Level Playing Field’ on HBO Max.
