What is Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)?
ABA is a specific type of evidence-based behavior therapy for Autism Spectrum Disorder and other neurodevelopmental disorders, aimed at reducing unwanted behaviors, increasing desired behaviors, and teaching new skills.
ABA utilizes an objective and reliable measurement to observe, monitor and measure behavior which includes the following:
- A functional behavior assessment (FBA) is conducted to identify specific undesirable behaviors or skill deficits, and create a baseline of current performance.
- A treatment plan is designed and created based on the individual needs identified in the FBA, with specific goals and objectives.
- ABA intervention is implemented aimed at reducing undesirable behaviors, increasing desirable ones, and teaching new skills based on the treatment plan created during the FBA.
- Data is continuously collected, evaluated and analyzed for each intervention goal, to determine effectiveness of intervention and overall progress.
- A re-evaluation is conducted in six month increments as required by funding sources, and based on outcome data, the necessary adjustments are made to the treatment plan which can include; adjustment of current goals, addition of new goals, or a graduation transition plan once all treatment goals have been met.
